Are Synesthetes Better Musicians?

Synesthesia refers to a neurological condition in which two or more senses are activated simultaneously. Synesthetes, as you may have guessed, refers to people with this fascinating neurological condition. There are over 70 different types of Synesthesia, and a person can have more than one type. It is not that a person with Synesthesia particularly perceives the world differently from anyone else, but they do experience it in a unique way.

Not all synesthetes experience sensations linked to music, but of the ones who do, songs, notes, and instruments can all have other things associated with then (like color or taste). Several musicians like Pharrell Williams, Mary J. Blige, and Lorde all said to have Synesthesia. Some musicians utilize their Synesthesia to aid in the creation of music. Some want what they see to match what they hear. Others may smell sounds. The experience is unique to the individual.

While we all have the capacity to become Synesthetes in our own way (primarily because it is an association between two stimuli (like a letter and a color)) you don’t necessarily have to be one to produce fantastic and engaging music, that is not to say that being a Synesthete won’t help you create beautiful and even awe-inspiring pieces. One study shows that people prefer the art of a Synesthete when associating with a particular song than other art pieces associated with the same song. However, there have been plenty of musicians who were not Synesthetes who have completely changed the music industry.

Above all, remember this quote by Randy Pausch, “It’s not about the cards you’re dealt, but how you play the hand.” You have the potential to do or become so many wonderful things, and your life is in your hands to make and do with it whatever you choose.
