Can Music Therapy be used to Help Treat Eating Disorders?

Music therapy can be one of many forms of treatment to help people with eating disorders. It is important to remember that not all eating disorders are as simple as they initially seem. For example, people suffering from anorexia might be, in actuality, seeking a way to gain control. Many eating disorders are linked to psychological, as such music therapy can be a benefit too to help a person deal with the psychological aspect of the disorder, while other interventions, treatments, or therapies can be used to deal with the physical aspects.

Music therapy isn’t the same as just listening to music. Aside from being implemented by a practitioner, many things separate music therapy from mealy listening. Music therapy also entails applying and interacting with the music. The treatment will differ from person to person, but music therapy is there to help (depending on the therapy goals). Music preferences play a role in the song selection a music therapist might choose for their patience; for that reason, it is good for music therapists to stay well versed in all types of music.

There are a lot of ways music can help a person struggling with an eating disorder. For one, it can help them delve into their feelings and safely express them. In that way, they may be able to discover the heart of their eating disorder and seek to rectify it at its source. This can be done in a multitude of ways, for songwriting, to analyzing lyrics, or even group singing (which can be useful as it establishes a community-like setting, so they won’t feel alone). The purpose of music therapy in this context is to help the individual analyze themselves in a safe environment and freely express themselves, learning to cope and discover ways to manage and maintain optimal health.
