Anxiety is the body’s natural response to stressful situations. It primes us to fight or flee. This natural response elevates our heart rate and increases breathing so that we will have the oxygen needed to move quickly, however, in today’s time we may not always be in a life-threatening situation when these symptoms take place.

The thought of getting in front of others and having to perform is a stress inducer for almost everyone. And with it can come to a lot of anxiety which can be so strong that it can prevent you from taking action. Some of the symptoms of performance anxiety include changes in vision, nausea, and trembling in the hands, knees, or voice.

Few people are exempt from performance anxiety. However, it is possible to overcome this anxiety. Firstly, you need to accept that everyone makes mistakes, and even if you mess up, it doesn’t mean that you are any less of a performer. Second, practice as much as you can. The more, the better. Some things to avoid are caffeine and sugars as they can make you jittery, which can actually make your anxiety words.

Practicing and controlling your breathing can help as well because it provides your body and brain with oxygen. This will help reduce your heart rate and make it easier to think. One thing that can really help is imagining what it will be like to be in the stressful situation and perform whatever it is that you will have to perform. In this way, you can mentally prepare for the stress still perform while stressed.

A perceived threat can, at times, be worse than the actual threat. That means that the fear you’ll feel before you perform is often worse than when you perform the action itself, and particularly after the performance is over.
