Should Musicians Be Concerned about the Foods they Eat?

There are many professions that require the people in them to be choosy about the foods they eat. Most of these individuals are athletes (sports players, Olympic contestants, bodybuilders, etc.), but what about musicians? Many performers have to be on stage, and dance, or use their bodies in some capacity to aid in entertaining their audience.

We know that singers should be careful with what they drink. Among things you should not drink before a show are carbonated beverages. Sodas and the like can cause unexpected burning or hiccups, which is less than ideal for performances. Additionally, you’ll want to avoid alcohol as a singer because it can impact the muscle groups that you need to sing (like your vocal cords) which will make it difficult singing with accuracy and control. Stay hydrated, though. Music is demanding, and you’ll do better if you’re not dehydrated, so water is your friend.

There are some foods that can help promote brain function. In particular, foods with essential fatty acids, like avocados and olive oil, will do the trick. You’ll also want to consume whole grains, like oats, and brown rice. These foods burn slowly, providing you energy throughout the day. Sugars, on the other hand, burn almost instantly, which makes you susceptible to crashing after your energy boost.

Depending on your diet fish may also be a good choice, particularly fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids (you can also get this by consuming fish oil capsules). These oils can help lessen mental exhaustion and fatigue.

Above all, remember that everybody is different. As long as you know what you need to do and get the results you’re looking for, then that should be enough. Just remember that through it all if you take care of your body, it will take care of you.
