The Benefits of Playing the Piano

Playing instruments is a fantastic way to build one’s fine motor skills and appreciate the beauty of creating and playing music. The piano is a starter instrument for a lot of people and can go a long way to help people understand music concepts and apply them. However, playing the piano has more benefits than learning to play an instrument and the motor skills they can help develop.

Learning the piano can help increase the production of the human growth hormone, which is known to reduce aches and pain. While you may think that the growth hormone is produced almost exclusively in children, that’s not exactly the case, in fact, the production of this hormone is tremendously beneficial to older adults (who may be more susceptible to pain). Aside from the reduction of pain, human growth hormones can improve energy levels and help with muscle growth.

Playing the piano can also help improve your ability to multitask. In the case of the piano, it can be difficult coordinating your hands together, as they will have to play different notes and move differently from one another. After a while of practicing the control and movements of your hands relative to one another will become second nature to you. With time you’ll develop split concentration.

Along with split concentration learning the piano will help you develop hand-eye coordination. This has multiple benefits, from sports, or a higher sense of special awareness hand-eye coordination is beneficial to have and practice in daily life. From playing the piano, you’ll develop hand strength as well as strength in your arms (provided you are using proper techniques).

Learning the piano is advantageous in so many ways. If you are learning, remember that it may only seem like a single task with one potential benefit, but learning an instrument, provides lessons that can be applied throughout your entire life!
