With the end of the year quickly approaching the thoughts of many begin to shift towards hope. celebration, thankfulness, and love. We hope for a wonderful year and reflect on the year prior. We celebrate the ending of one year as we usher in the new. People choose to celebrate the new year differently some choose to celebrate by gathering together and watching parades, while others choose to count down the seconds to the tune of Auld Lang Syne.
Auld Lang Syne is an old folk song that was transcribed by a Scottish poet by the name of Robert Burns. It is said that Burns transcribed it from an old man who was singing. As time passed and the popularity of the song spread the lyrics gradually began to change. Despite the changes, the tune for Auld Lang Syne is familiar to people all over the world. Though the tune is internationally recognized, it is mainly the United States that this song is utilized in the New Year’s celebration.
The reason Auld Lang Syne is so very popular in the United States is largely thanks to Hollywood. Even today in American made movies; rarely is there a new year celebration without a large group of teens or young adults gathered around slurring the words of this old time favorite folk song over glasses and bottles of alcohol. Regardless, this song is not synonymous with celebration and good cheer everywhere you go. For some countries, this song is a song of sad farewells; in other countries, this song is meant to help ease the pain of separation with hopes of reencountering a loved one once more.
