Hyperacusis

Hyperacusis is a disorder that makes suffers unable to deal with everyday noises. Sounds can seem amplified, even if others don’t seem to notice then. It goes without saying that this hearing disorder can be very disruptive in everyday life. Some sounds may have seemed heightened are everyday noises, like the humming of a fan, the engine of a vehicle, or even loud conversations. These are noises that many people habituate to and can therefore easily filter out, but for a person with Hyperacusis, this is difficult if not impossible.

Hyperacusis is caused by a few things, such as a head injury, ear damage, infections, depression, and many other things. Being near, loud noises (like a gun firing) can also trigger the condition. If you think you have this hearing disorder talk to your doctor. The treatment will depend on the causes of the condition. If it is because of an injury your brain or ear there is a chance that the condition may go away on its own.

One treatment your doctor may recommend is called sound desensitization, which is exactly what it sounds like. A person undergoing this treatment will have to learn how to deal with the sound. Treatment entails listening to noises during a specified part of the day with the sound gradually increasing as the treatment continues.

A doctor may also prescribe or recommend medication to help with the stress. It can be difficult dealing with the stress Hyperacusis may cause. One thing that is not recommended if you Have this hearing disorder is earplugs. While muffling the sounds may provide temporary relief, it can actually make the condition worse over time. This is because instead of getting used to the condition, you are masking it. Eventually, you may need to take your earplugs with you during social settings as well.
