How to Become a Background Singer

Background singers are responsible for providing the background vocals for a piece of music. In a way having background vocals is like having depth in your music. You may not be actively aware of it, but it enriches the sound in a way that would be noticeable if it were missing.

To be a background singer you’ll need to be able to harmonize; sight reading would also be a handy skill to have. As far as education is concerned, it wouldn’t hurt to have a music degree, but it’s not strictly necessary. You’ll go much farther much faster if you are musically trained in some respect. Having studio experience will also serve you well. If you are an aspiring background singer and in need of studio experience you may be able to get it by volunteering and helping out others with studio projects. You’ll need to be able to double your voice and re-create the same vocal take consistently to find success as a background singer.

The lifestyle of a background singer can be unpredictable as jobs and projects can pop up at irregular and seemingly unpredictable times. Flexibility in your schedule is a necessity as these jobs tend to be quite time sensitive. Creators may need you to work fast, while still maintaining quality. A few personality traits that will serve you well in this line of work are punctuality, the ability to work under pressure, and the ability to take constructive criticism and direction.

If you are looking to be a background singer, you will be far more successful at finding work if you have connections. Whom you know will help you with actually getting your foot in the door however, the rest will depend on your skills and the impression you make.
