A Brief History of Pop-Rock Music

Pop is short for popular and can refer to all music types, however, the word pop is most times uses interchangeably with the music genre pop-rock as the two words that comprise it was synonymous with one another at one point in time. Like many other types of music this genre has grown and changed quite a bit since its origins.

Coming into exitance in the early 50’s pop-rock was uniquely distinguished by the use of both the guitar and bass. This catchy instrument pairing accompanied many singers and ultimately took the world by a storm, altering the way music was played and enjoyed. As time progresses this catchy music began to morph and transform. By the 1960’s what was once known as rock and roll became known as pop and roll. It was then that bands, such as The Beatles, came on the music scene aiding in the revolution of the quickly growing popularity of the genre as a whole.

In the 1970’s rock music split into two subcategories, soft rock, and hard rock, the subcategory of soft rock morphed into what was then pop-rock. The genre’s name took on more meaning as it became a term uses over multiple bands and genres of music as a descriptive term. As the 1980’s rolled in the genre lost some of its popularity, to other types of music that were gaining traction at the time. But it didn’t take long for this beloved genre of music to reemerge from the shadows to fame once more.

In only a decade pop-rock made its return and many bands and popular music artists began creating rock music. In the 2000’s Pop-rock divided into a plethora of subcategories as it continued to expand and alter over time. Even still this genre is going strong today and will continue to do so well into the future.
