Creating a Hit Song: Commonalities in Music

Creating a hit song may be more difficult to do now than ever before. There are a lot of options and songs to choose from and it seems everyone likes something different. But there are still songs that garner enough attention from the general public to be classified as a hit. There are a few commonalities that hit songs share with one another that will shine some light on things that could help your song become a hit.

Vocals that stand out: Vocals are not all that comprises a song, however, the vocals are the part of the song that your audience will most actively interact with. Think about it like this: When fans create a cover of a song typically the ratio of vocal covers is greater for any one song compared to instrument covers. You’ll want your vocals to stand out a little from the rest of the song. It will also help if your vocals are to be clear and easy to understand.

Relatability: If you want the majority of listeners to enjoy your music they need to be able to relate to it. This is the case regardless of the genre. This is evident when listening to the radio, it seems like the same songs are constantly being played, that’s because fans show their appreciation with their interactions with the music (downloading, radio requests, buying songs etc.).

Another thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to be the best. There are a plethora of singers who have gained wide recognition without being the best singer or having the best techniques. Instead, singers who are distinctive tend to top the charts because they are easily recognizable. As opposed to focusing on trying to sound good, instead, these artists strived to create a unique sound entangling their personalities into their music.
