Consistent vs. Inconsistent Music Styles in Restaurants

“Music is there for us to explore. To intentionally limit yourself to one, two, or three genres is limitation at its worst. Music is huge; it’s a gigantic history lesson, and if you are true music fan or a musician, you should explore it. It’s all right there in front of us.”

-Phil Anselmo

Have you ever been to a restaurant and heard music playing in the background? For many eateries, it’s not uncommon to hear similar styles of music each time you visit the restaurant. Is it more useful and conducive to the overall dining experience to have consistent music styles or inconsistent ones?

The choice of music depends on the diners and the feel of the restraint. When the restaurant is themed, it would make sense for the type of music to match; however, there are times when altering the types of music can be beneficial. While restaurants may be themed meals and daily specials may also be themed. In those cases, having music that matches the daily theme may be better.

Switching up the music that is played may be useful in that the customers can experience something new. Studies have shown that some music can impact appetite as well. In the cases of coffee shops or fast food restaurants, more upbeat music may be used because they are intended to be quick stops. A more relaxing atmosphere may be better for sit-in restaurants where waiting is required to help keep the customers calm.

Surveys and AB testing may be useful when it comes to determining which music styles (and whether it should be consistent or inconsistent). Geographical location can also play a significant role in which music styles may be the most beneficial. In truth there is no right or wrong answer when comes to what you choose and music may not make as big of an impact on food sells as other factors (like the quality of the restaurant).
