Different Ways to Learn Music Theory

Every human is different. Just because one method of learning works for some doesn’t mean it will work for all. Sadly, this notion is not utilized in school systems, however, that doesn’t have to be the case when learning music. Music theory can be a cornerstone for your musical endeavors, but it can also be a bit daunting. There is a lot to learn when taking on music theory, and some of the things you learn will differ slightly depending on the instrument you play. Still, there are some ways you can make the learning process more enjoyable for yourself.

For starters try to look at your favorite songs. Look for the sheet music and learn it. There is something special about incorporating elements of things you like into your learning. Not only will this help motivate you when learning you can genuinely enjoy the experience. Another thing you can do is try learning other instruments. Not only will this help improve your skills with the instrument you’re learning by solidifying core concepts, but it can also provide a small respite from your current studies without losing consistency.

You can incorporate some form of movement in your studies. This will help you feel the rhythm and can also help with counting. This is particularly useful when sight reading and performing rhythms. With practice, your body will internalize these lessons and, in time, it will become a natural thing to you. Lastly, try writing and composing a song of your very own! This is an amazing and fun experience. You’ll get to be creative and incorporate your lessons into practice. Your song will be a manifestation of the fruits of your labors.

Learning music does not have to be a daunting task. In the end, very few will care how you learned something so long as you know it.
