Fans, Friends, and Music Promotion

There is a plethora of ways to promote your music online. This can be a good thing because you have options and can choose which method you like best, however, it can also be bad because it makes finding you that much more difficult as your fans may utilize only certain channels. Data is always useful, getting into the mind of your audience and knowing about their online habits will increase your chances of encountering them and growing your fan base.

Different channels and social media platforms do different things, some platforms such as Pandora and YouTube are great for amplifying your work, while platforms Like Facebook and Instagram are good for engaging with your audience. The intended use of the platform is something you’ll want to consider when trying to decide which platform will work best for you. It is not unusual to use multiple platforms, in fact, many artists do. However, growing your fan base does not have to start with complete and total strangers, you can have fans much closer than you think.

One of the best ways to get yourself out there is asking for the support of family and friends. This may seem like a fruitless endeavor but humans are closer to each other than you may think. Six degrees of separation is the idea that every person is, at most, six steps from any other person. A friend of a friend can be the difference between a lateral carrier movement or skyrocketing to the top. If you have friends or family who like your music asking them to like and share it can be a cost-efficient way to push your work out to a larger audience. Of course, you can do this by passing out tangible demos, or (seeing as it’s the digital age) share the links to your music after posting them online.
