How Music Impacts your Heart

Have you ever noticed that music can impact your mood? It can ignite the sparks of anger into a raging inferno, or mellow the mood like the waves of a calm sea. Many of us know music has the capabilities to impact our mood and emotions. There is a quote that says “When you’re happy, you enjoy the music, but when you’re sad you understand the lyrics.” When we are sad we look for something or someone that can relate. However, music impacts us on more than just a psychological regard.

Some researchers may have found evidence that our heart beat mimics music we’re listening to. According to a study form Pavia University located in Italy there is evidence that music can impact our cardiovascular system itself. The study found that heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing increased with faster-paced music. These vital signs returned to normal when the music stopped. This finding is great because it opens the gates to using music therapy in a different way. Typically, music therapy is used to improve cognitive functioning, emotional development, socials skills, and the like.

In comparison to other medical fields not as much is known about how music therapy works, however, if this research finding is accurate then we may have a better understanding of music therapy in general. You may have experienced some of the effects of music yourself. Perhaps you’ve noticed that your heart rate increased when you listened to a certain song, or maybe your breathing changed. All in all, music can do more than simply change our mood it has the capabilities to directly impact our health form a physical standpoint.
