How to Kill your Music Career

A career is a bit like a reputation “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it” (Benjamin Franklin). And while careers aren’t always built on reputation per se, the principle stands true, a few bad choices (even in your personal life) can ultimately impact your professional life. Here are a few ways to totally kill your music career.

For starters not having an appropriate attitude. Doing things like showing up late, not rehearsing, and being mean to those you’re working with can all hinder the lifespan of your success. Even if you are wildly successful people aren’t going to want to work with you if you are acting overly entitled and rude.

Not properly promoting yourself, this encompasses selling merchandise and establishing a web presence. While it was not necessary to establish a web presence in the past, that is not the case today. Many of the people you are trying to target will be online in some fashion and it is almost career suicide without it. This means hitting popular social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

Not budgeting properly. Doing things like paying to play shows or giving away too much free music can be a real hindrance if you are trying to turn a profit. You really need to manage your funds and make sure that every action, especially if you have to pay for it (like paying for ads on a social media site) turns a profit. This means you’ll have to study up on ads to increase your chances of turning a profit while also minimizing the amount of time and money spent testing the actual ads. Learn the do’s and don’ts of ad creation and know your fanbase.

Hopefully, with these tips, you can have a wonderful and thriving musical career.
