Music and Brain Growth

Music helps tremendously when it comes to child development. It can help with fine motor skills and establishing a sense of rhythm. Music can also help with the development of people of any age. While just listening to music can have a plethora of benefits like aiding in restoring memory and serve as a helpful form of self-expression, music can do so much more. The brain is like a central station from which we process our human experiences. Because Music has such a drastic impact on our brains it’s easy to see how music can change our experiences and perceptions.

Music increases the actual functioning of the brain. Not just consciously, but behaviorally and physiologically as well. Some songs can do good by promoting relaxation and decreasing anxiety and irritability, which is why you may hear soothing music softly playing in the background of some health care facilities. But not all changes to the brain by music are necessarily good ones. For example, studies have shown that exposure to certain music can negatively alter the brain and cause aggressive or hyperactive behaviors.

There are a ton of studies about music and the impacts they have on people, and there are many perspectives from which to look at it. Another aspect is frequency. It is said that certain frequencies of music will alter brainwave patterns and can (depending on the frequency) bring forth a calming sensation. Many different cultures make use of the impact’s music has on the brain. Indian and Chinese’s classical music has been known to be used in helping treat certain illnesses.

Throughout the world, people have recognized the immense power of music and many have sought ways to utilize it in ways that benefit the lives of others. From meditation to treatment and therapy, music is one tool of healing that won’t be going away any time soon.
