What is a Music Score?

A Music Score is basically sheet music. It is the composition of music in written form. Scores are useful as they allow you to play a song as intended and you can read them as you play so you don’t have to completely memorize the music (though you should practice enough to develop the memory so you’re not completely dependent on the score). However, you don’t need to know how to read music to have a successful music career. Not one member of the Beatles could write music, and yet in their time, they were a very successful band.

Similar to written language, musical notations have evolved throughout history as music itself evolved. Growing in complexities and ranging in pitch, it is not difficult to see why music notation had to be altered to accommodate these changes. We would likely not have scores they are today if it weren’t for people such as Pythagoras, a Greek mathematician who noted the relation to pitch and string length among many other things. Music notations from the early Greek societies are among the oldest instances of music notations we have.

It may come as no surprise that the church is credited with the development of music notations of the west. While at this time exact pitches were not specified a way of sharing music was starting to become more and more common. After some time, music would begin to expand outside of the church and Printing music using various methods would also become more common. Even still Music is still changing. Today you can find sheet music online. You can look up tutorials on how to play almost any song you want. While the ability to read music may not be as necessary today as it once was thanks to our vast resources it is still important to remember where we’ve been as we progress forward.
