Music Technology Education

“Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue.”

-Plato

Many career opportunities fall under music technology such as musicians, teachers, sound engineers, and even sound technicians! If you decide to major in music technology you can expect a creative blend of music and technology courses. Additionally, you’ll learn how to operate in a variety of platforms that utilize music (i.e., music creating software in addition to learning how to compose and perform music).  At the end of your education, you will have learned how to compose and synthesizes music for a variety of multimedia such as film and games.

The institution that you attend to obtain your degree will determine which courses you need to take. Additionally, you’ll want to carefully consider the type of music technology degree you get (some degrees make it easier to pursue higher education than others, often the difference between one degree from another is the number of courses you’ll be required to take).

Despite being a supposed pathway to greater success you must remember that your education is an investment. It’s okay if you need to consult others or talk to an advisor to be sure that you understand what you are signing up for when selecting your major and what to expect once you obtain your degree.

One last thing to remember is that jobs only care that you have a degree, so even if you feel like you majored in the wrong thing, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re out of options. Additionally, if you are seeking a higher education that doesn’t completely match your undergrad major, you may only need to take a few additional courses to make up the difference. Each school is different, but remember that you always have options.
