In a previous blog, it was mentioned that one does not necessarily need to learn how to read music in order to play it and be successful. While that may be true it is worth noting that knowing these things as well as that fall into the realms of music theory can still be a great help, and just because you don’t know it does not mean you can’t learn it.

What is Music Theory: Music Theory is knowing and understanding the particular language of music. While studying music theory one will find themselves describing how music is made by composers and musicians. It entails the how music is practiced and all the potential music has. Music theory covers a large array of topics that may or may not at times seem useful to the person learning it, but, one cannot have a good sense of where they are going without understanding where they have been.

Why learning music theory might be helpful: Many people love music, however, they are likely casual listeners, enjoying what they initially hear they may overlook subtleties that make the music great. Simply put Music is like perfumes. There is a top note, what you initially smell, and a base note, the smell that lingers throughout the day. Understanding these small details to a greater depth and then applying them to your music could turn your work from mediocre to a masterpiece.

Music is a process: Creating music is like crafting almost anything else, Sure you could probably get it right on the first try, but, the quality of the piece will likely improve upon editing and revisions, so don’t be scared to keep working on it till you’re happy with the result. Having an understanding of music theory will help you know what to change and how. In addition to that, it will help you avoided commonalities and clichés.
