Music and the Writing Process

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Music is used in a variety of ways every day, from adding to our shopping experience to affecting our appetite. Music can directly impact our writing process in a couple of unique and very helpful ways. So, the next time you have a paper to write you may just want to consider listening to some music.

Music encourages focus. While this will vary a little from person to person, not everybody needs complete silence to concentrate. In fact, music may help the thoughts and ideas flow out easier than stark silence, which is ideal for brainstorming and drafting. The presence of music may also provide you something to subconsciously focus your attention on, thus preventing distraction from other stimuli.

Another way music can help you in your writing is by the way music impacts your mood. Changing your mood may be a necessary step to writing if you find that your current mood and the topic you are writing about do not match. Music can help foster a sense of intensity or other emotions that can be reflected in your work.

Writing is a beautiful form of self-expression that when paired with music a song is created. Writing is a process that is more difficult for some than others. Every person has their own strengths and weakness, so if we are able to come up with a solution that helps us complete a task, then it may not be such a bad idea to share it with others.
