Should Musicians Switch Between Music Genres?

While it is not uncommon for a person to like multiple genres of music, often a musician will not have the luxury of easily flowing between multiple genres when it comes to the music they release. Many record labels feel like they can’t market the songs of a musician who switches between genres. This creates a few problems for both the musician and the audience.

Having a musician stick to only one type of music may be great for marketing; however, it’s stifling in some ways. Switching genres should be celebrated and encouraged s not only can different styles be celebrated, but it can also make the musician a better performer, expanding their creativity and range. Additionally, if a musician feels cornered and it seems like they are unable to work on something that they want to; the musician may run the risk of losing enthusiasm and drive for their work.

There have been many musicians have switched genres, so it’s not entirely uncommon, however in noting that many musicians have to declare a particular genre in the first place leaves little room to grow, particularly if the musician is starting off. The other downside is that people who listen to music lose the potential to expand their own musical experiences, by first being introduced to it by an artist they already like. The other issue is that it limits the audience of the musician.

With indie music growing in popularity many indie musicians are offered more freedom to interact directly with their fan base. While it may require more work to get yourself out there without the backing and advertising of industry, for some, the freedom is worth it. Record labels aren’t bad; they are just trying to turn a profit. Always weigh your options and examine what you are willing to compromise and do to achieve your goals.
