Potential Problems Music Can Create
Everything in moderation, you’ve probably heard this at least once, in some variation, in your life. For as beautiful and fantastic as music is, there are times it can create issues. Some of these issues, such as the risk of hearing loss, can be prevented, though one should be aware of the volume they are exposing themselves to and seek to take preventive measures to protect their hearing whenever possible. Stay in tune with your mind and body and stay on the lookout for these other, not so obvious risks.
Emotional flooding
We’ve talked a lot about the link between music and emotions; in most cases, we’ve mentioned music in a positive light. However, emotional flooding can be overwhelming; but it’s not all bad. Sometimes being touched by a song can help open dialog between people and if in a therapeutic situation, the patience and therapist can work through the situation and bring new clarity or a different perspective on the situation. Additionally, not every single person likes music, and sometimes the presence of a song can be anxiety-inducing. This doesn’t have to be with all music; it can exist with particular genres or artists.
Memory triggers
There are instances when or minds suppress memories (usually traumatic ones) to protect us until we are ready and able to deal with the trauma. Music can trigger these memories prematurely (if the song is linked to the memory). There are times, too when the memory is not repressed, but simply too painful to deal with. An example would be when we lose someone, and every song seems to remind us of them. This is not to say that music only resurfaces bad memories, it can also help us recall pleasant memories, too.
Overcoming hardships are a part of life, but that doesn’t mean that they are without pain and strife. Remember that there are resources available to you if you need help. Never be afraid or ashamed of asking for support, we’re all on this crazy journey called life together.
