Qualities of a Good Drummer

While not all music needs drums, drummers can be a fantastic addition to your band. Drums typically provide the beat of the song and are a large part of how people dance to and interact with the song itself, so this is one role that should not be underestimated. Having said that, what are some qualities that you want in a drummer?

One who understands the role. Drums help the rest of the band sound better. And it is important to note that the band is a team working together to create a uniform piece. In a sense, a good drummer should have musical empathy as to not try to override the other musicians (unless it is a part of the song, like a drum solo).

The desire to practice. This is important regardless of which instrument you play. Practice is a crucial element to improvement. With desire and perseverance, you can overcome a lot of obstacles. A part of practice includes learning new things. Know the basics of your field but also pick up a few new tricks along the way. Study others and always seek to improve. This will make you a more versatile and well-rounded musician.

Learn an additional percussion instrument, like the piano. Many musicians learn the piano, it helps with understanding the fundamentals of music, is a very versatile instrument, and can be very fun to play. You can also use it to help you learn and practice music theory. Learning to read music can be a great help as well in opening new doors and increase your understanding.

Lastly confidence. Confidence is so important, if you believe you are the best and truly have faith in your knowledge and skills then it will start to reflect in your playing. People can sense confidence and will ultimately respond to it.
