How to Select the Right Beat for you

Creating a rap is an involved process with many factors. From the sound you want to the lyrics, there is much to consider. How do you select the right beat for your project?

One way to go about the beat selection process is to start with your concept. What is your rap lyrics about? What is the message you want to convey to your audience? The topic of your project can help tremendously when it comes to choosing the right sound. Your rap is the embodiment and manifestation of any number of ideas such as experiences, desires, or emotions. In that regard, there is a transfer of emotions from you, the creator, to your audience. You’ll want to be sure that the feelings in your lyrics match that of the beat.

Allow the beat to do the rapping. Have you ever listened to a beat and suddenly a rap started forming in your mind? Sometimes selecting the perfect beat can mean listening to the beat first and just letting the rest fall into place.

Each beat has a certain sound and feel to it. Some beats are relaxed, others are dark and serious. Being able to listen to a beat beyond the surface sound and really get a feel for the beat will serve you will in selecting the sound that is right for you. Instruments and tempo are both things to consider as well. There is no hard-fast rule to the creation process and utilizing a little creativity is a great thing, however, you’ll want your sound to mesh well with your lyrics and topic.

As in many things in life starting off may be difficult but the more exposure and experience you have the easier the process becomes.

“Music is life. That’s why our hearts have beats.”
