Songs can change the world

Music binds people together. It provides us with conversation topics, something to dance to, and it sets the mood for events. It is currently 2017 and songs like ‘Shape of you’ by Ed Sheeran and ‘Stay’ by Alessia Cara among the most popular right now.
Music itself has changed a lot in the past century. In both how it’s performed and the messages that are in it. Music is a reflection of culture, so when certain topics were considered taboo chances are you wouldn’t have heard about said topics in music either. In that way, songs are a sort of timeline that allows you a quick glimpse into the past. Because we sing about what is relevant at that time you can learn a lot about what people considered important at the time.
Take the song ‘Where is the love?’ by the Black Eyed Peas. At the time this song was created America was going through some trying times and the song reflected this. However, songs have also been known to bring about change as well, not just respond to them. An example of this is many of Bob Marley’s songs. Through the use of a song, he was able to lift the spirits of an entire country and make a saddened nation proud to be who they were. Both are good. One type is meant to bring about awareness and the other is meant to bring about change. You could even argue that ‘where is the love’ attempted to do both.
When you decide to create something what will your motivation be? Will you bring about change or perpetuate an idea? It could be a story, a poem, or anything else really. That point is that most things you do has the capacity to change someone’s life. And if enough people’s lives are changed the world will change as well.
