The Impacts of Streaming Music

Streaming music has changed many things, it allows for people to enjoy songs they love in a pretty convent and very flexible way. Even now physical copies of music (such as cd’s) are becoming more obsolete and will likely take a place next to cassette tapes and records before too long. That’s not to say that the digitalization of music was without its challenges, such as loss of revenue because of piracy. Streaming has caused many changes, both good and bad.

For one thing, streaming makes it significantly easier to find new artists. This probably goes without saying but because streaming music helps put the individual listener in control they are able to listen to what they want. As such if they find an artist they like, streaming makes it so much easier for the individual to check out more of their work. A rather interesting consequence of this is that people are more easily able to binge listen to their favorite artists. In masses, this has the potential to rocket any individual artist’s career significantly.

With the advent of streaming, we may begin to see something we haven’t in a long time and that is free and easy access to music. Though some of the details are still being ironed out. For example, there are some streaming services who would like an artist to sign on exclusively with them as a way to garner more potential customers. The problem is with the word ‘exclusively’. It is doubtful fans would want to sign up for multiple services with the same functionality to be able to listen to their favorite artists.

Streaming will likely continue to change both the music industry and how we experience music as time goes on.  Regardless, for up in coming artists streaming certainly presents a wondrous opportunity for gaining exposure.
