Why is it that Songs get Stuck in your Head?

Most people have experienced this at least once. You’re going about your life, and a song comes on then before you know it the song gets stick in your mind and you find yourself humming and singing the song to yourself all day. What’s worse is that the harder you try to suppress it the more the song stays in your head. But how do you stop the song from playing on repeat in your mind?

One way to get a song unstuck is to stop fighting it and sing or listen to the song until the song becomes dislodged from your mind. If this method doesn’t work for you don’t worry there are other ways to ‘change the track’. Firstly, you could try singing or playing another melody or instrument. If that doesn’t work you can do another activity that distracts you. Depending on the person which activity works best will vary. For some working out may be a good distractor. Sometimes sharing the song with a friend or loved one can also be a way to get rid of the song.

Ultimately if none of those methods work time could be the answer. Eventually, something may come along to distract you or the song may simply just fade away. All in all, perhaps having a song stuck in your head may not be that bad. For one the creator of the song has made a song that really sticks out in your mind. It’s a testament to the brilliance of the song and you were able to find something good that resonated with your person. We may not like it when a song is stuck in our minds, however, the mere fact that it happens is a testament to the power of music.
