The Benefits of Music for those Undergoing Surgery

Surgery, for many, can be a frightening and stress-inducing experience. Surgery is not always avoidable, and people have surgeries for so many different reasons, but regardless of the reasons, it can still be a scary experience, and the stress beforehand can be unbearable. However, music may be the thing that helps you relax. As Mat Fox once said, “This is a known fact when we listen to good and soothing music, our brain responds to every task we perform. It calms down our brain and provides healthy effect in our life.”

According to the British Journal of Surgery, music does an excellent job of relieving anxiety caused by surgery. Pain reduction is another benefit of music. In fact, patience, when in pain, reported reduced pain and anxiety after listening to music. Music selected by the patient had the best impact. Music can also help surgeons, as well. Even for experienced surgeons performing surgery can be stressful, so the presence of music can do wonders for everyone involved.

There are potential downsides to music. For surgeons, music can be distracting, which is far from optimal when performing an intense task like surgery. Additionally, not all people respond to music in the same manner. Some individuals, music can raise their anxiety, particularly if they have a negative association with music.

All in all, music may be a low-cost alternative to helping reduce nerves, stress, and pain for people who have to go under the knife. There are other things that can help calm us, too. Perhaps having loved ones near, expressing our fears and anxieties to a close friend, or doing something to mass the time to keep your mind off of the procedure. There is more than one way to quell anxiety and fear; music is but one tool in an entire warehouse of solutions.
