The Connection Between Cooking and Music

“I found great rewards in cooking a dish and feeding it to someone. It was a means of communicating. I was giving part of my talent or my gift, and sharing it with somebody, making somebody happy. And it gave a lot back to me, and I wanted to do more and more.”

-Lidia Bastianich

We know that music and eating go well together, music can impact our appetite, as well as how the food tastes to us. However, music has another connection with food, and that is the relationship between music and the preparation of food. When you cook, chances are that you don’t cook in complete silence. You may watch a show, listen to an audiobook, or listen to music. Many people enjoy listening to something while they cook, and can make the experience more enriching in a similar way that eating with friends heightens the experience of the meal.

Another advantage that music may have when comes to cooking food is that our appreciation increases. We live in an incredibly fast-paced world; music can offer us respite and allow us to slow down and focus on a single task, even if only for a moment. Cooking, for the most part, typically requires a particular amount of time. Between preparation and actually cooking the task can require a lot of time. To some, cooking can be frustrating because of this. As such, we may opt to eat out, have food delivered, or choose to eat something that is quick and easy to prepare.

Music can have a direct impact on our mood and emotions; in that regard, it can help us feel differently, which can be a tremendous help if you are not feeling particularly excited about cooking. Music can also help you maintain your mood. When you think about it, music is a little like a spice of life; it enhances the overall flavor if the dish.
