Why do Some Bands Break Up?

A band breaking up is the news that fan’s don’t want to hear. Even wildly successful bands can break up. Bands break up for a multitude of reasons here are a few.

Death of a band member

Perhaps one of the saddest reasons a bang can break up is if a member dies. There are times when a group can’t recover. Trying to play and move on after the death of someone close, who you’ve made a life with and who have equally influenced your life in so many ways can be difficult. The other band members may not want to play without the deceased member. Even the death of a manager can have a tremendous impact. Death, in general, is the source of immense emotional pain and everyone recovers differently. Death can change the entire dynamics of the band; the members may lose motivation, bicker, or become irritable as they try to recover.

They may want to move on

Some band members want to move on. You may see this a lot in child groups. As members get older, they may want to explore other things. Band members may also want to try going solo or form a new identity for themselves outside of their current band. Instead of being the person in that one band, they may want to reprise that role and advance their career in another respect.

Band breakups can be stressful and heartbreaking, but sometimes it’s inevitable, and for as sad as they can be for the fans; sometimes it’s just time to move on. As Ale Rose said during a 2011 press release, “Let sleeping dogs lie or lying dogs sleep or whatever. Time to move on. People get divorced. Life doesn’t owe you your own personal happy ending especially at another’s, or in this case several others’, expense.”
